Hey Kids!
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, also called PENNDOT, is responsible for many of the roads in your neighborhood. Right now, it is working to find a way to improve US 219 from Meyersdale, Pennsylvania to Interstate 68 in Garrett County, Maryland.
US 219 was here in the area before you were born. Just as you change as you get older, roads change as they get older. Sometimes they are in need of repairs or sometimes, roads can't accommodate the number of cars that travel on them because they were built to hold fewer cars. PENNDOT must work to fix the old roadways or build new ones.
Schools, hospitals, churches and farmlands are important places in your community. These important things are called resources. PENNDOT works really hard to make sure these places aren't bothered or disrupted when building a new road or fixing an old one. PENNDOT wants to preserve these resources as much as possible.
When a new roadway is built, PENNDOT also considers what will happen to the environment. PENNDOT tries to preserve things like trees, ponds, birds, plants and animals. For example, if PENNDOT needs to build a road through a wetland, it will build a new wetland somewhere else.
PENNDOT wants to make your roads safer and improve all the old roads without harming the community or environment. Please help us with our project by telling your family and friends about the project. Information about the US 219 Improvement Project can be found on the web at www.us219.com
