Mining

geotechnical structure underlying study areaThis cross-section graphic illustrates the geologic structure of the bedrock and geologic formations that underlie the study area. Several of the coal seams are identified, as well as the approximate boundary lines of deep and surface coal mines.

Mining is a principle industry of this project. At least seventeen (17) individual coal seams, five (5) limestones seams and three (3) clay seams have been commercially exploited by both surface and deep mining. It is not known when coal was first discovered in Somerset County, however, records indicate that as early as 1759 blacksmiths contracted with landowners to "dig" such quantities that they needed. The first known mine opened in 1810 where blacksmiths mined their own coal. Commercial mining of coal in Somerset County started in 1872. Although surface mining of coal continues to the present day, there are no operating under-ground mines in the study area at this point in time.
