Background

U.S. 219 Project Location Study Area U.S. 219 is a major north-south transportation corridor providing access from Canada, through New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. It has been designated as a principal arterial road on the National Highway System (NHS). The portion located in Pennsylvania is on the Pennsylvania Priority Commercial Network (PCN).

U.S. 219 is part of a larger transportation corridor, called "Continental 1," which extends from Florida to Canada and is promoted as a multimodal international trade corridor. "Continental 1" is supported by numerous business and government leaders as having great potential to benefit Pennsylvania by increasing the opportunities for expansion of existing industries, attracting new manufacturing industries, improving access to tourists, and increasing the need for service-type jobs.

On December 8, 1999 the first annual meeting of the Continental 1 Coalition was held. At this meeting, a spokesperson for Representative John Murtha emphasized the importance of an upgraded U.S. 219 to the economic growth of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and pledged Representative Murtha's support for completing the improvement of U.S. 219 from Meyersdale to Somerset. In addition, largely due to ongoing pressure from the public and the business community since the early 1950s, the U.S. 219 Improvements Project was listed as a "Priority Project" in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), and was designated to receive federal funding.

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) supports the need for improvements to the U.S. 219 corridor as a vital transportation link needed to improve economic and social conditions in the Appalachian Region. U.S. 219 is one of ARC's priority corridors, Corridor N, on the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS). ARC intends the ADHS to be a system of interstate type highways linking the Appalachian Region to the rest of the U.S. and Canada.
