PENNDOT
Engineering District 9-0 has undertaken preliminary engineering and
environmental studies for improvements to US 219 from the four-lane
Meyersdale Bypass north of Meyersdale to the four-lane section of US
219 near Somerset.
PENNDOT recognizes that US 219 provides a vital transportation corridor through Somerset County. A Project Needs Analysis completed in 1999 indicated that improvements to US 219 are necessary due to traffic volumes, safety issues, and the lack of efficient access between I-68 in Maryland and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Thus far into the project, the PENNDOT Team has collected data, developed alternatives, and performed environmental studies. Throughout this process, PENNDOT has coordinated with federal and state environmental protection agencies and the local communities in the Study Area to determine the best solution for Somerset County and its citizens. The evaluation of alternatives and recommendation of a preferred alternative is documented in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which was circulated for public and agency comment in November 2004. A Public Hearing on the DEIS was held on November 15, 2004. Currently, review comments are being addressed and the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) is being prepared.
