Fun Facts:

  • Speed limits have restricted cars from their beginnings. In Britain, there was the "Red Flag" Act of 1865 which required that all cars have two drivers, while a third person walked in front waving a red flag. The act was repealed in 1896 followed by new speed limit laws.

  • Many early cars had no gears, which meant they could not climb hills. These cars would come to a standstill, then begin to roll backward. The 1890 Benz Victoria was the first car to give the driver the option of switching gears.

  • Beginning in 1909, cars usually had windshields to keep out wind and dust. Windshield wipers hadn't yet been invented, so drivers smeared the shield with raw potato or apple to help rainwater run off.

  • The 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster came with a golf-club locker standard.
